Reading the Market's Positioning
Price tells you what happened. Positioning tells you who is exposed to what happens next. The CFTC's weekly Commitment of Traders report breaks open interest into three camps — commercials hedging real business risk, large speculators trading for profit, and small traders — and reading it turns a raw government report into something you can act on.
- Rankings — which markets show the most extreme net positioning, long or short
- Biggest movers — the largest week-over-week position changes
- Long/short flips — markets where a group's net position just changed sides
- Search facility — pull any market's full positioning history
Why Commercials Matter to Hedgers
If you hedge grain, livestock, or energy, the commercials column is your peer group. Watching how producers and end users as a whole respond to price levels tells you whether the trade considers a price high or low — context that improves the timing of a hedging program. Professionals read this report every Friday; making it a habit is one of the cheapest edges in the market.
